Castle Hill in Withern stands as a two-metre embanked island inside a wide dry moat, marking a Fitzwilliam residence that later became a Civil War defensive position. The earthworks still show angle bastions and ramparts built during the changing control of the area, while the waterlogged ground may preserve seeds, leather and timber from the household that lived there.
