Castle Hill moated site, 350m south of St Peter and St Paul's Church

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castle Hill holds a substantial medieval moated enclosure where a local landholder likely defended a modest manor from rain, rivals or pride. The ditched platform and banks still mark the boundary of that domestic fortress, preserving the shape of a household that has stopped naming itself. Three hundred and fifty metres south of the church, the earth remembers the weight of doors, firelight and footsteps now lost to time.
The National Heritage List for England records Castle Hill moated site, 350m south of St Peter and St Paul's Church as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the 14th century, the moated site at Castle Hill is thought to have been associated with a medieval manorial estate. Its scheduling as a protected monument highlights its importance in understanding local medieval land use and social structures.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
