Castle Hill is a triangular earthwork at the western edge of Shaftesbury where a steep natural slope meets a broad cut ditch. It may have been an unlicensed castle built during the reign of King Stephen, though no proper castle record survives. Excavations there recovered tripod pitchers and a halfpenny of Stephen, while a deep pit in the middle still waits for a better explanation.
