Castle Haugh is a circular ringwork, five to six metres high, perched on the northwestern edge of a Ribble Valley tongue of land. Its dry ditch and earthen breastwork still trace the shape of a medieval stronghold that watched the river and surrounding fields. Locals call it Cromwell's Basin, a story that adds mischief to the stones but does not change what the earth preserves. The mound remains one of the better-surviving ringworks in England, holding its shape because little later life buried or broke it.
