Castle Gresley motte and bailey castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castle Gresley rises as a steep conical motte above three baileys, preserving the shape of a Norman stronghold that watched the land between the River Trent and River Mease. A guarded outwork bridged the ditch at the east end, suggesting that entry required permission and awareness. Buried halls, kitchens and stables still lie beneath the grass, waiting for imagination to walk their lost floors.
The National Heritage List for England records Castle Gresley motte and bailey castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built by the Gresley family in the 12th century, Castle Gresley motte and bailey castle is remembered as an important medieval stronghold associated with the influential barons of the East Midlands.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
