Castle Gresley rises as a steep conical motte above three baileys, preserving the shape of a Norman stronghold that watched the land between the River Trent and River Mease. A guarded outwork bridged the ditch at the east end, suggesting that entry required permission and awareness. Buried halls, kitchens and stables still lie beneath the grass, waiting for imagination to walk their lost floors.
