Castle Forbes

Country House (19th Century)

What is recorded here

Castle Forbes is a gothic revival house in Newtownforbes where the Forbes family have lived since Captain Arthur Forbes received 1,266 acres in 1623. Fire, rebuilds and added wings have layered the castle through the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, yet it still stands as the seat of the Earl of Granard. Its old-growth forest, small airport and changing rooms make it less a museum piece than a living estate, still shaping itself around the people who remain there.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Forbes as Country House (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Castle Forbes, a 19th-century country house in Scotland, was built by the Forbes family, a historically prominent Scottish clan with lands in Aberdeenshire. It is remembered as a testament to the family's influence and the architectural legacy of Scotland's landed gentry during the Victorian era.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
