Castle Folds stood as a Romano-British walled settlement on the limestone pavement of Great Asby Scar, where eight-foot thick walls and a thirteen-foot parapet created a defensive obstacle far stronger than typical local farms. The outside slabs at the base were ripped out by hostile action, suggesting the place fell to violent raiders before medieval herders reused the south wall for a temporary summer shelter. Dozens of stone huts built into the enclosure ringed an open central space, waiting for people whose names vanished while the broken stones still mark the violence that ended them.
