Castle Dykes is a medieval motte and bailey in North Yorkshire where massive earth banks still frame a circular keep above deep ditches. The castle clings to a ridge beside steep valleys, exposing much of itself to the sky while hiding its western approaches. Under grass and memory, wooden bridges may have swung across those ditches, admitting people into yards that ringed the keep like cups around a stone.
