Whitepark Gardens still carries a Second World War road block, concrete and steel laid across the approach to Castle Douglas. The town stood at the edge of Galloway, far enough from the main centres that a small obstruction might have seemed absurd, yet the war turned ordinary roads into front lines. Perhaps a driver slowed there, heard the cliff wind in the trees, and wondered what invisible enemy the block was built to stop.
