Dunmuir Road carried horses, carts and later cars through Castle Douglas until the second World War turned ordinary travel into a military problem. A road block rose there to stop unwanted vehicles and preserve local materials for the war effort. The street may have narrowed for months, forcing people to walk past a structure they had never needed before.
