Castle Ashby House is an Elizabethan prodigy castle in Northamptonshire, rebuilt from 1574 for the Compton family and still occupied by the Marquess of Northampton. Its deep central porch forms the stem of an E-shaped plan, a bold celebration of Queen Elizabeth I, while flame scars on the window lintels record the Civil War fire that broke the building work. The house is less a dead monument than a living stage: kings, servants, musicians and gardeners moved through it, and the village may have been saved by one old woman’s quick eyes.
