Castell y Bere is a ruined linear castle on a rocky hillock in Gwynedd, built by Llywelyn the Great from 1221 to control the south-west border and mountain trade routes. Edward I expanded it after taking it in 1282, but Madog ap Llywelyn besieged and apparently burnt it during the 1294 revolt, after which Edward abandoned it to decay. The bare siltstone towers still stand above the Dysynni Valley, preserving the moment Welsh pride first learned that stone could be broken as easily as wood.
