Gwydir Castle is a fortified Tudor manor house built around 1500 on the floodplain edge of the river Conwy, where Wynn ancestors reused carved stones and a spiral staircase from Maenan Abbey. It stood at the heart of a vast thirty-six thousand acre deer park, hosting kings and barons while shadowed by older bloody battles between Welsh kingdoms. The name may mean low land, wet land or blood land, giving the pretty courtyard a darker edge beneath its peacocks and yew walk.
