What is recorded here

William Burges built Castell Coch for the Marquess of Bute between 1875 and 1891, placing a vivid Gothic fantasy above the ruins of a genuine 13th-century castle. Its chambers still startle with painted monkeys, parrots, pomegranates and fables, as if medieval imagination had been set loose inside a Victorian hillside. The Bute family rarely lived there, leaving the castle more like a dream built for display than a home shaped by daily life.
The National Monuments Record of Wales records Castell Coch, Tongwynlais as Castle from the Medieval; Post Medieval period. The saved point comes from the official national record. Inclusion does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Castell Coch, near Tongwynlais, was built in the 13th century by the Normans, likely as a defensive structure following the conquest of Glamorgan. It is remembered for its strategic position and as an example of early medieval military architecture in South Wales.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
