Knucklas Castle rose as a square stone keep with four round towers on a steep hill, built by the Mortimers around 1220. Welsh forces captured and destroyed it in 1262, and Owain Glyndŵr smashed what remained in 1402. The lost castle may have guarded a marriage story involving Gwenhwyfar and Arthur, but it also stands above the Battle of Beguildy and beside the grand Knucklas Viaduct.

Knucklas Castle, also known as Castell Cnwclas or Castle Ring, was built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the de Lacy family, later held by the powerful Clugnet family. It is remembered as a key defensive structure in the Welsh Marches and for its association with the Clugnets, who played a significant role in regional politics during the late medieval period.
