Castell Bryn Amlwyg: a ringwork and enclosure castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castell Bryn Amlwyg is a Norman ringwork in Shropshire, built rapidly from earth and timber during the eleventh or twelfth century to hold the Welsh Marches. Its oval bank-and-ditch form marks a modest frontier residence rather than a grand stone palace, yet it still shapes the hill where it sits. The castle may have housed a minor lord, watched passing roads, or simply kept neighbouring land under control. Whatever its exact role, it belongs to the dense Marches network of earthwork castles raised after the Conquest.
The National Heritage List for England records Castell Bryn Amlwyg: a ringwork and enclosure castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
