Castell Bryn Amlwyg is a Norman ringwork in Shropshire, built rapidly from earth and timber during the eleventh or twelfth century to hold the Welsh Marches. Its oval bank-and-ditch form marks a modest frontier residence rather than a grand stone palace, yet it still shapes the hill where it sits. The castle may have housed a minor lord, watched passing roads, or simply kept neighbouring land under control. Whatever its exact role, it belongs to the dense Marches network of earthwork castles raised after the Conquest.
