Carsluith Castle is a ruined medieval tower house beside Wigtown Bay, built for James Lindsay of Fairgirth in the late 15th century and later enlarged by the Brown family. The Browns feuded with the McCullochs, sheltered Jesuit priests, and left for India in 1748, abandoning the castle to the sea wind. Their stair tower, carved arms and gunloop cellars still stand between the shore and the road, preserving a house where faith, violence and exile became ordinary.
