Carrigeen Castle

Castle

What is recorded here

Carrigeen Castle rose above Cahir as a bridewell from 1812, using towers, crenellations and curtained yards to make imprisonment look like knightly defence. It later became an officers' residence, a private home and a guest house, yet its arrow slits, round tower and stone enclosure still suggest a place built to be watched rather than loved. The change from jail to hospitality does not erase the jail; it only gives the same walls a warmer reason to stand.
Carrigeen Castle is recorded as a castle in County Tipperary. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
Carrigeen Castle was built in the 17th century by the Butler family, who were prominent Anglo-Norman lords in Ireland. It is remembered as a historic seat of the Butler dynasty, reflecting their extensive influence in the region during the early modern period.
