Carra Grave Yard

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Carra Grave Yard is a children's burial ground in County Galway, Ireland. It lies in low-lying grassland beside a road, shaped like a rough triangle twenty-three metres long and five metres wide. Modern field walls mark its edge, while scattered stones inside hint at graves, though only two remain in place. The small size and separate location suggest a community set aside this spot for its youngest dead, keeping them close to the living road but apart from adult graves.
In low-lying grassland adjacent to a road. This poorly preserved children's burial ground (L 23m; Wth 5.1m)is roughly triangular in plan. It is delimited by modern field walls. Within the interior a number of randomly scattered stones indicate graves; only two examples remain in situ. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 29 August 2019
