Carns

This is a National Monument in State care (no. 518). Carn D in the Carrowkeel-Kesh Corann passage tomb cemetery. On the bog-grown northern slopes of the Bricklieve Mountains and 10m S of a passage tomb (SL040-086----). The disturbed basal layers of a circular cairn (diam. 17-19m) are partly covered by a layer of peat. Structural remains are scant. Some kerbstones are visible almost 2m inside the present perimeter at the ENE and 1.5m N of these a large slab lies prostrate on the mound. Almost 3m W of the surviving kerbstones there is a set stone (L 0.7m; Wth 0.3m; H 0.75m). Some 3m NW of the last there is a set stone (H 0.85m) now leaning slightly. A large slab, one end partly buried in the cairn, leans against this stone. Some 4m to the S and close to the centre of the cairn there are two set stones at right angles to each other. One is 0.9m long and the other 0.7m and the latter, the taller of the two, is 1m high. Passage tomb, dating to the Neolithic period (c. 3200–2500 BCE). Part of the Carrowkeel passage tomb complex, one of the most important and well-preserved groups of megalithic tombs in the west of Ireland.
