Carndochan Castle guarded the eastern border of Gwynedd and the road through the pass between Bala and Dolgellau, probably built by Llywelyn the Great before 1240. Its oval walls, horseshoe towers and square keep rose on a rocky hill above the Lliw valley, with the large west tower watching the approach and perhaps housing people as well as soldiers. Excavations found blackened earth, bones and charcoal, suggesting fire and violent destruction at its end. Today only low wall relics and a southern tower rise from scattered stones, while the slopes keep the shape of a fortress that once controlled movement, herds and fate in north Wales.
