Cardinham Castle belonged to Richard Fitz Turold in the eleventh century, making it one of the oldest recorded power centres in mid Cornwall. The family kept the castle until the fourteenth century, when it decayed into ruins rather than falling through war or conquest. That gradual forgetting suits the place: a castle can disappear not by destruction but by stopping being useful.
