Cardiff Castle and Roman Fort

Cardiff Castle is a medieval fortress built inside the broken wall of a Roman fort that controlled the River Taff crossing. Robert FitzHamon claimed the ancient ground in the late eleventh century, turning Roman military pride into a Norman household. The castle grew through the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries until its keep rose above the older fort like a new claim on memory.
