Carbisdale Castle is a Scottish baronial country house built 1905 to 1917 for Mary Caroline, Duchess of Sutherland, on a hillside chosen to face the Sutherland lands. Its tower carries clock faces on three sides but leaves the Sutherland-facing side blank, a refusal of time itself. The castle later became a youth hostel, sheltered young travellers through decades, and now passes again as a private residence, still watching the road and rail line it was set against.
