Captain Francis Grenfell 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers 24th August 1914
Captain Francis Grenfell, a British Army officer, was killed in action on 24 August 1914 during the early stages of World War I while serving with the 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers in Belgium. He is remembered as one of the first British soldiers to die in the war and is commemorated in several memorials, including the Menin Gate.
