Canongate Bridge blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Canongate Bridge. The bridge spans the River Jed beside a ford. The road continued up the Canongate, the main access to the royal burgh. It had a 'port' or gate on it to control access to the town. It is an unusually fine 16th century, or earlier, structure and some of the stones used in its building are believed to have come from the Friary.
