Canisbay Parish Church is associated with Saint Catan or Cathan, a 7th-century Irish monk and missionary linked to the spread of Christianity in northern Scotland. Local tradition holds that he founded a monastic site in the area, and holy wells or sacred springs nearby may have been used for baptism or healing rituals connected to his cult.
