Calf Island is a small islet in Frenchman's Bay where Charles W. Eliot and his sons camped each summer from 1871 to 1877, turning a lonely rock into a place of memory after his wife's death. The island had earlier belonged to Native Americans, then Joseph Bragdon, then a farmer who grazed cattle there, but it was Eliot's repeated returns that gave it shape in human time. Young Charles drew the camp in 1875, and that sketch preserved what the sea and wind kept changing around it.
