Bank Cottage still stands beside the Caledonian Canal at Torcastle, a small 19th-century shape built to serve the water route cutting through the Highland. It may have housed a keeper, a worker or a traveller paused by distance, giving the canal human warmth instead of empty grandeur. The cottage is recorded, not celebrated, which suits it: a useful room in a vast artificial landscape, remembering people rather than monuments.
