Caldragh

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Caldragh is a children's burial ground in County Cavan, Ireland. A rectangular area twenty-eight by fifteen metres, it still holds a slight bank of earth and stone on three sides, with large boulders scattered along the perimeter. The fourth side opens into a field bank marked by a modern trench. The shape suggests care, not accident: a boundary drawn around the smallest dead, left visible enough to be remembered and quiet enough to be forgotten.
Rectangular area (int. dims.28m NNW-SSE; 15m WSW-ENE) enclosed by a slight bank of earth and stone except at NNW where it is bounded by a field bank with a modern external trench. A number of large boulders lie along the perimeter of the enclosure on three sides. Recorded by Davies (1948, 110). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
