Caisteal Morar Na Shein

Castle (medieval)

What is recorded here

Caisteal Morar Na Shein stood at the north end of Loch More where River Thurso escapes the water, serving as the medieval hunting lodge and stronghold of Reginald Chen in southern Caithness. By 1769 the structure had collapsed into ruin, transforming a functional castle into a ghostly shadow that later writers misread as a Pictish tower. The earth has since swallowed every stone, leaving only the memory of a lord who hunted beside open water before the landscape erased his name.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Caisteal Morar Na Shein as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
