Cairn

Cairn, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cairn is a Neolithic ring barrow in County Cork, built around 3000 BC and still standing beside Skeagh. Its flat top spans nineteen metres, while a second barrow waits twenty metres north, as if the first had called a witness across the grass. People may have gathered there at midwinter, when darkness presses close and fire makes the stones deliberate.
On S slopes of Slieve Miskish Mountains. Drawing by Somerville (UCC) shows cairn. Site not located. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
