Caher-moneenakirka

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Caher-moneenakirka is a ruined fairy fort in County Galway, Ireland. It sits 150m south of another ringfort, reduced to a shallow circle barely visible beneath grass and a later field wall. What remains is a ghost of a boundary, perhaps human, perhaps something older, now swallowed by the land itself.
Some 150m S of a ringfort (GA042-123----). Overgrown and poorly preserved circular cashel / (D 23.5m) defined by a drystone wall visible only at N; / elsewhere it is overlain by a field wall. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
