Mairi joined the cadets at fourteen and still remembers the first night without her mother. They marched until their legs burned, then sat on wet grass while stars appeared one by one. She wanted to run home, but the distance made her small instead of frightened. Years later she teaches other girls to watch the sky before they decide they are ready to leave.
