What is recorded here
Twelfth-century builders raised a mound above an older fort in Farranfad, layered history into one hill. The mound may be a motte, a wooden tower seat or simply a boundary marker, but it still stands scheduled and visible. People lived there across eras, perhaps watching the land or defending it, and the earth kept their shape long after they vanished.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as c12TH MOUND; possibly MOTTE on earlier OCCUPATION SITE: PIPER'S FORT. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.; MEDIEVAL. Recorded protection: Scheduled. A 12th-century motte, possibly constructed on an earlier occupation site known as Piper's Fort; it is a medieval earthwork with scheduled protection status, reflecting early feudal settlement patterns in the region.
