What is recorded here
Kames Castle and its walled garden in Bute belong to the 18th century, when aristocratic estates turned private land into staged nature. The walls may have excluded strangers but they also focused heat, visibility and desire on a small circle of plants, people and rituals. Nobody is obliged to enter the garden today, yet the boundary itself still performs its old job: it makes the inside feel owned, arranged and slightly withheld.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Bute, Kames Castle, Walled Garden as Walled Garden (18th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Kames Castle, including its notable 18th-century walled garden, was built by the Kennedy family, who were prominent landowners on the Isle of Bute. The castle and garden are remembered for their historical and architectural significance, reflecting the estate's role in the social and economic life of the region during the Scottish Enlightenment.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
