Kames Castle still stands on Bute, though the rear wing of its walled garden cottage resists easy dating. That uncertainty is not a flaw; it is a hint that the build changed often enough to blur its own edges. The stone may have served gardens, households or castle work before becoming a cottage at all. A place can be young in name and old in function, and the rear wing likely carries both.
