Rossend Castle still stands in Burntisland, Fife, but the gazebo remains an unassigned shadow beside it. The exact location is known, yet the purpose and period have vanished. A gazebo exists to watch or be watched, so perhaps it faced the sea, perhaps it faced the castle, perhaps it faced nobody at all. The absence of a date does not diminish the shape; it sharpens the mystery.
