Sandpit quarrying in Leggetsrath West, County Kilkenny, broke through thirty centimetres of soil in 1960 and exposed several buried bodies, one stretched east to west. Local memory points to a workhouse burial ground from the 19th century, where desperate people were laid to rest without markers or ceremony. The quarry men likely paused before continuing, aware that ordinary sand had become a grave.

Human remains discovered during quarrying in a sandpit in 1960. The remains of a number of individuals were uncovered at a depth of 0.3m. At least one burial was extended and oriented E-W. According to local information the area was a burial place attached to a workhouse in the 19th century.
