Burial in Irelands Eye

Burial

What is recorded here

Waist-high green chaos still strangles the church in County Dublin, hiding whatever layout once existed. In 1868, workers broke through that silence and found stone coffins waiting in the dark. The dead may have crowded the land before the living forgot them, sealed beneath grass that now swallows memory whole.
There is little evidence today for a cemetery surrounding the church. Impossible to determine due to waist height overgrowth that surrounds the church. However, in 1868 stone coffins were discovered here (Cochrane 1893, 402; Wakeman 1892, 104; Cochrane 1896, 1, 10, 14). A possible early Christian burial site, dating to the 6th–10th century AD, indicated by the discovery of stone coffins. Its significance lies in providing evidence of medieval burial practices in the area, though its exact context remains obscured by overgrowth and lack of surrounding cemetery features.
