Burial in Cloonshee

Burial

What is recorded here

In June 1998 human remains, a skull, were discovered in a bog at Cloonshee, near Ahascragh, Co. Galway. They were dug out of a drain by an excavator. There was no evidence for a grave structure or artefacts associated with the burial. According to a report by the Assistant Chief State Pathologist, the skull was probably that of a female, which was not buried for more than 200 years. No evidence of homicide was found (pers comm. M. Cahill and M. Sikora, NMI).

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
