Bullaun stone (present location) in Ballynacarrig

A granite block (48cm x 52cm) with a circular bowl (diam. 27cm; max. D 10cm). The surface around the circumference of the bowl is defaced. Moved from the church site at Castletimon (see WI036-009005- for original location record) sometime after 1990 to its present location beside the steps of 'Brittas Church' where it is embedded in cement which has '2000' etched into it. Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as a baptismal font. Such stones are often associated with local saints and folklore, though specific traditions for this example are not recorded.
