Bullaun stone in Lugawarry

This hemispherical bullaun stone (H 0.28m; 0.53m x 0.46m), which has a round-bottomed bowl (D 0.13m; 0.21m x 0.2m) was in a prominent position in the E gable of a house. It was removed to Sligo Museum before 1981. The provenance of another bullaun stone which lies beside it at the Museum is not known. (pers. comm. M. A. Likely dating to the early Christian period, bullaun stones were often used for ritual purposes, such as anointing or as holy water basins, and are associated with saintly traditions and local folklore.
