Bullaun stone in Laragh East

This stone was moved from near the stone pair known as the 'Gossan Stones' (WI017-006----) near Scarr Mountain to its present location on the grounds of Glendalough House (see WI018-038---- for present location record). It consists of a coarse-grained granite block (0.59m x 0.52m; H 0.19m) with a bowl-shaped depression (0.30m x 0.275m; D 0.15m) (pers. comm. C. Corlett). Likely dating to the early medieval period, the Bullaun stone was traditionally used for the ritual purification of chalices in Christian practice, though it may have had earlier prehistoric or pagan significance. Its relocation from a mountainous area to a house estate suggests historical associations with both sacred and secular sites.
