Bullaun stone in Knockanearis

Bullaun stone

What is recorded here

There is local information of an ‘altar stone’, also described as a stone with a basin that could be a bullaun stone, at the site of the large enclosure (WA034-024001-) which may be a church site (Power 1952, 90). The stone could not be found. Power, Rev. P. (1952) The placenames of the Decies. (second ed.) Cork University Press. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 02 October 2011
Likely dating to the early Christian period, the bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, such as the preparation of holy water or as an altar. Such stones are often associated with ecclesiastical sites and local Christian traditions.
