Bullaun stone in Brockagh

Situated in a field N of St Kevin's Road. Nine granite boulders with thirteen basins. Four of these stones are in a group and are known as the 'Seven Fonts'. Marked on the OS 6-inch map 100m to the NW is 'Thornbush (site of), St Kevin's Keeve'. Desrcibed by Healy (1972, 128) as a boulder measuring 1.1m x 1.1m x 0.7m, 1 basin diam. 0.38m x 0.32m; depth 0.15m. In corner of field east of last (WI023-005003-). A flat-topped boulder with the basin 0.12m from one edge'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Likely dating to the Early Christian period, bullaun stones were traditionally used for baptisms or ritual purification. The multiple basins suggest a possible ceremonial or communal function, and such sites were often associated with local saints or folklore.
