Bucholly Castle stands on a high Caithness peninsula, its tiny fourteen by twenty foot keep clinging to the cliff edge above a deep cutting trench. Mowats held the strange property from Robert I until 1661, packing kitchen refuse onto the seaward grass where birds still pick through centuries of forgotten meals. The west wall rises thirty feet against the northern sky, guarding a narrow courtyard where clay-bonded rooms once echoed with footsteps. Erosion gnaws the foundation even now, carrying stones into the sea that Mowat cooks dropped beside the kitchen fire.
