Mairi set two clay pots on the castle ledge and waited for the well water to climb through the stone. She believed the house drank before it gave, taking heat from her hands and returning calm to her blood. The pots filled slowly while she sat barefoot in the grass, and she left one pot behind because the well had taken enough from her to remember the shape of mercy.
